My guidebook: Onion Garden (coffee shop and garden)
A fairy kingdom in the middle of Westminster, with all its endless construction at ground level, glass buildings reaching up to the sky, and office shirts everywhere in between.
Like nature itself, Onion Garden is ever-changing and sometimes unpredictable. Classical music in the greenhouse? A wreath made of smiling onions? Oxbridge-graduated patrons? Lemons in bloom? Carol singers in December and cocktail nights on Thursday evening? You name it.
You may see “chief onion” Jens, reorganising, replanting, or watering something. In addition to always being busy, he can be recognised by his magnificent moustache.
The best way to build a first impression
- Order artisan tea: it comes in a nice teapot.
- Take a short stroll in the garden: it’s not that big, but somehow bigger on the inside.
