My guidebook: National Portrait Gallery, London

As they describe themselves: a gallery about people, for the people.

From the Tudors to Harry Styles, this museum is about meeting people face to face, whether in portraiture or in person.

National Portrait Gallery The best way to build a first impression

Check the schedule (“What’s on” on the website; Instagram Stories) and find a free event, for example a drop-in drawing session (normally Friday evening, monthly). All materials are provided, along with guidance from artist educators. These activities attract very interesting attendees, bohemians and whatnot. A new friendship cannot be guaranteed (it’s always a miracle), but finding yourself in an inspirational crowd is quite possible.

Definitely visit the shop: it has some unexpected accessories.

Admission is free, no pre-booking needed.
Donations welcome.
Some exhibitions and events are ticketed.
